The Predator ★★★★☆

3.5 stars

I really enjoyed this book. I found out about it based on one quote and it really filled all my boxes! Sure there are some points that could have been better but overall it was a good, quick read. The first 2 books in this series follow the same character but the ones after, do not. I will only be reading the first two books.

Goodreads Summary:

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object in the field of death?

In the dark underbelly of the mob, Tristan Caine has been an anomaly. As the only non-blooded member in the high circle of the Tenebrae Outfit, he is an enigma to all – his skills unparalleled, his morality questionable, and his motives unknown. He is lethal and he knows it.

As does Morana Vitalio, the genius extraordinaire daughter of the rival family. What Caine does with weapons, Morana does with computers. When a twenty-year old mystery resurfaces, Morana infiltrates Caine’s house, intent on killing him, unaware of a tie that binds them together. Hate, heat, and history clash together with unexpected sparks.

But something bigger, something worse is happening in their world. And despite their animosity, only they can fight it down.

My review:

I think this book had the potential to be even better than it was. One of my favorite things in books is dialog and this book had wayyyy too little of it. There were a lot of internal monologues and staring when there could have been conversations. It makes sense to an extent because our main male character is a broody broody man but it was kind of a pain to read. I may have skimmed a little bit if I’m honest.

Our female main character, Morana, is someone I really enjoyed reading about. She seemed to have a grasp on life and what it meant to be a crime lord’s daughter and rebelled against it. It made me really like her as a person and I was always really interested to see what she did next. She was outspoken at times that maybe wasn’t the smartest but it was nice to see someone stick to what they were saying so well.

This book is set in a mafia universe but doesn’t really have a ton related to that. If it is something that you look for, this may not be the best book series. I didn’t really need to have this aspect in the book so it wasn’t really something that I missed. I think this book did okay without it but maybe the later books will have more relation to the mafia environment.

I would recommend this book if you’re interested in a quick read with some spice. I’m interested to see where the book goes in the next one, especially since there wasn’t a real cliff hanger at the end of this one!
